Title:  "Nationalism, Colonialism and the English Folk Tale"

Abstract

This talk focuses upon the intersection between folklore and nationalism in British folk and fairy tale collection of the late nineteenth century.  Andrew Teverson explores the continuities between the work of continental scholars, such as the Brothers Grimm, and British scholars, such as Joseph Jacobs, but argues that British collection in the period was given a distinctive character by English concerns about empire.

Andrew Teverson is Director of Studies for English Literature and Creative Writing at Kingston University, London. His recent publications include Salman Rushdie (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2007) and ‘Migrant Fictions: Salman Rushdie and Fairy Tale,’ in The Fairy Tale in Contemporary Literature, ed. Stephen Benson (Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 2008). He is currently working on a book about English folk and fairy tales in colonial and postcolonial contexts.
