Federica Zullo:

When:   Wednesday   August 27    4.30 PM

Where: Education and Humanities 3.041

Title:  Nation and Narration: Postcolonial India and the works of Amitav Ghosh

Federica  is a PhD candidate in the Literatures and Cultures of the English-Speaking Countries Program at the University of Bologna. Her masters level dissertation was on the literary production of Bombay and Los Angeles with reference to Rushdie, Desai, Mistry, Chandler, Ellis and Ellroy.

In her paper Federica  proposes to distinguish between eurocentric  and postcolonial readings of the nation via the works of Gellner, Hobsbawm, Arjun Appadurai, Benedict Anderson, E. Balibar, Timothy Brennan and Homi Bhabha.  She will investigate the historical and political processes that have led to the construction of the nation in postcolonial societies and how these processes have been  captured in works of literature. Her proof texts are taken from Rushdie and, more immediately for this paper,  Amitav Ghosh
